Landscape I

1991. Bronze on rock, 16 x 6 x 5 ½" (40.6 x 15.2 x 14 cm). Courtesy the artist and Cheim & Read, New York

Landscape I was the first in a series of works Benglis created after arriving in New Mexico in 1991. She was awed by the striking rock formations in the region: forms made of sand and clay. The dramatic, almost sculptural landscape of this region, which Benglis describes as "through wind and water formed," has deeply influenced works such as this one, which is made of bronze and found river rock.
